Golda Meir Wall Mural
The Objective
Denver’s Golda Meir Museum on the Auraria Campus needed an installation for a classroom to liven things up and bring together the classes held there. The clients wanted the mural to pay homage to the museum’s focus, which was Golda Meir’s story of struggling as a young woman in Denver who worked hard to become the Prime Minister of Israel but also remain neutral enough so that it did not conflict with the class subjects or their student’s personal beliefs. Below is an image of how the wall looked before any designs were implemented.
The Solution
I extensively researched Golda Meir’s story, personal beliefs, and the historical impacts she had during and after her life. From there I brainstormed various ideas and narrowed down the strongest concepts to put into development. In the end I developed a unique and creative timeline inspired mural that showcased Golda Meir’s journey while paying homage to the museum’s brand standards. This was done by utilizing their color palette and fonts to bring everything together in one design reflective of the museum’s brand and values while making the design appear as neutral as possible to avoid being distracting or offensive to the classes also held there.
The Process
Below you can see see some of the process work that went into creating the wall mural.
Sketching
Here you can see some of my sketches for the wall mural design. Having been inspired by her famous quote that the museum loved, I wanted the concept to be my main inspiration when sketching my ideas. Since the quote focused on fanning ones inner sparks to fuel the flames of achievement I focused on expressing Golda’s own rich history and impressive achievements.
Digitizing
To do this I had to find all the possible images that were both relevant and available to use in an official classroom to avoid any legal or copyright issues. After that I made a quick mockup of the wall that had relatively the same layout using an actual image of the wall as a reference. From there I experimented with various different designs until I could narrow the best ones down and fuse them by taking the best elements and putting it into one.
Production Sample
This is a sample for the production file I made for the wall mural. If you know what a production file for a vinyl cut wall mural means then here is mine. For those who are unfamiliar with production files, in short there is a reference for how the wall mural is supposed to look like and then below are the carefully measured prints that the person putting the wall mural up would print and then cut out and place them by hand.
